General Information about the Department

The roots of the Department of History of Anadolu University go back to 1983. After the division of the university in the year 1993, the department was restructured and the fields of history teaching and academic studies were expanded. In the Department of History; with the student-centered teaching under the umbrella of Ancient, Medieval, Early Modern, Modern and Republic of Turkey departments, emphasis is placed on the development of the student's ability to do independent research. In particular, the department aims to apply a multi-faceted curriculum based on the fact that the science of history aims to teach and research what kind of development societies have made in political, social, economic and cultural fields starting from the ancient times and what kind of contributions they have made to world civilization. Emphasis is placed on being objective, critical thinking, fighting against dogmas in society, educating the mind, understanding the "other" and providing the historical perspective needed for some of the most important problems of our time within the framework of a democratic, humanist and rational education. The educational staff of the Department of History contributes to the field of history with national and international publications.

Career Opportunities

The main purpose of the History Department of the Anadolu University is to train historians competent in the field of study, humanist and adhering to the principles and requirements of scientific ethics. Students who graduated from the department can be employed as academicians in the universities and also as the experts in the libraries, archives and museums. In addition, they have an opportunity to be a teacher in the primary and secondary schools, provided that they complete their pedagogical formations.

The Department of History of Anadolu University is located on the northern plains of the Phrygian Valley, in the heart of the Anatolian peninsula which is a bridge between Asia and Europe, in other words, Eastern and Western civilizations. As it is known Anatolia, beginning from the earliest cultures in the prehistoric period, has been a homeland for many civilizations and thus provides all kinds of sources for the researchers aiming to specialize in any specific field of history. In this context, the Department of History offers to the students to study not only the courses related with the different periods of history but also language courses like the ancient Greek, Latin, Persian, Arabic and Ottoman. In general, the program includes compulsory courses on the Ancient Civilizations, Medieval (the Seljukid and the Byzantine Civilizations), Ottoman Civilization and the History of the Turkish Republic. However elective courses are also offered on these subjects and students can also choose other elective courses from various programs of the departments of the university. Furthermore, the library of Anadolu University, which access to numerous databases, is another strong feature of the department for a qualified historical education. Finally, it should not be forgotten that Eskişehir offers unique experiences to the students as a “student and university city”.
