Departmant of Pharmaceutical Microbiology
General Information about the Program
Pharmaceutical microbiology is an interdisciplinary science that studies the relationship between human, microorganism and drug. It examines the biology of bacteria, fungi, viruses, protozoa, helminths and arthropods, the infections they cause in humans, the ways of transmission and protection of the infections, microbiological diagnosis, immunological diagnosis methods, basic and clinical researches. Investigates the effects of antimicrobial drugs on microorganisms and the resistance mechanisms developed by microorganisms against drugs. It investigates the antibacterial, antifungal, and anticarcinogenic effects of extracts from various plant or animal sources, drugs or chemicals.
Studies in the field of interest of the department of pharmaceutical microbiology; production and optimization of different microbial products (primary and secondary metabolites) with microbial culture processes, sterilization-disinfection methods, sterile or aseptic product preparation methods, microbial quality control in pharmaceuticals, food, cosmetics, disinfectants and detergents, activity determination of preservatives in these products, pharmacy and pharmacy practice in the hospital. Clean room technology and good manufacturing practices are targeted.
Pharmaceutical microbiology and immunology are closely related. Rational use of antibiotics, immune mechanisms against microorganisms and their different products, pathologies related to different disease tables such as allergies, autoimmunity or cancer are studied.
Pharmaceutical microbiology department aims to train pharmacists who have absorbed basic concepts and have the ability to apply them. Follows the developments in the field closely. Makes up-to-date research that can serve public health. It aims to transfer its knowledge to students effectively.
Graduates of pharmacy and veterinary faculties, molecular biology and genetics departments, and biology departments can apply to the graduate program.
The Department was founded under the leadership of Yağmur TUNALI in 2004 and started master program in the 2007-2008 Academic Year. The department continues its research and education activities with 1 Professor, 2 Associate Professors and 1 Research Assistant.
