General Information about the Department
Art History is defined as a branch of science that learns the material cultures of historical accumulations. Art History; architecture, painting, sculpture, examines the formation of visual arts such as handicrafts in the historical process with scientific methods in terms of political, cultural, religious, social and economic aspects. The purpose of Art History is to play a role in understanding the artworks and the artist.
Anadolu University Art History Department was established in 1993 and there is formal education. Optionally, students can take English preparatory education for 1 academic year when they start the Art History department. The duration of the Art History program is 4 years. Each academic year consists of two semesters which consist of fall and spring. Those who have completed 240 ECTS credits at the end of four years of undergraduate education receive the title of "Art Historian". The credits of the lectures are the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) credits determined by considering the workload of the students. The determination of ECTS credits is based on the measurement of the time spent by the students for each lecture at the end of the semester by means of surveys.
Since its establishment, the department has included Turkish-Islamic Arts Department, Byzantine Art Department, Western Art and Contemporary Art Department. In the Art History education at Our University; there are lectures from Central Asia on Turkish Art and Architecture, Ottoman Empire Architecture, Western Influences on Ottoman Empire Architecture, Early Christianity and Byzantine Art, Western and Contemporary Art. These lectures emphasize architecture, architectural decoration, crafts, painting, and sculpture. Also, occupational notions such as Art History terminology and research methods, archaeological excavations in Art History and museology are explained. Our University's Art History department is among the members of FEDEK (The Association for Evaluation and Accreditation of University Programs in Mathematical, Natural and Social Sciences), which was established to develop scientific research and the benefit of society.
Career Opportunities
Students who successfully graduate from the four-year Art History education receive the title of Art Historian. Our graduates, who have completed their formation training are assigned as a teacher with the score of the national exams. With the score obtained from the same exam, they can work as a specialist or researcher in Museums, Cultural Heritage Preservations and Regional Directorates and General Directorate of Foundations affiliated to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Also, they can work in private museums and art galleries. Graduates of our department with experience can participate in archaeological studies in Byzantine and Turkish-Islamic excavations. In addition, they can progress in the academic field by taking master and doctorate education.
