General Information about the Program

Department of Educational Sciences started education in the 1983-1984 academic year. The main functions of the Department of Educational Sciences are providing undergraduate level training in educational sciences, delivering teacher training courses in undergraduate programs in the faculty, organizing in-service training programs for administrators and teachers in primary and secondary schools and other educational institutions, and conducting research in the field of education. There are four programs in the Department of Educational Sciences: Programme in Curriculum and Instruction, Programme in Guidance and Psychological Counselling, Programme in Educational Management, Inspection, Planning and Economy, and Programme in Measurement and Assessment in Education. The Guidance and Psychological Counselling Department offers an undergraduate program. There are 45 educational staff, (12 Prof., 6 Assoc. Prof., 14 Asst. Prof., 5 Dr. Lec., 3 Lecturer, and 5 Res. Ass.). The department has been accepting students to the program since 2008. The courses in the program are given by 13 full-time scholars (4 Prof., 3 Assoc. Prof., 4 Asst. Prof., 1 Res. Asst., and 1 Lecturer). The program offers a variety of courses in the area of specialization, general culture, and practice opportunities in the field. Besides the core course, students can also take elective courses starting from the second year. Majority of the courses are given theoretically in the classrooms furnished with digital technologies. Students begin to take applied courses starting from the third year in the program. The program emphasizes counseling practicum courses such as individual counseling, group counseling, and career counseling. The program has a Counseling Practicum Unit located in the Faculty of Education with two large rooms for group counseling and six small rooms for individual counseling sessions. Students in the program also get a chance to observe guidance and counseling services in schools with different levels and run psychoeducation programs in selected schools.

Career Opportunities

The Guidance and Psychological Counselling Programme in the department offers master's degree and doctoral degree in general counseling track besides the undergraduate degree. Although the majority of our graduates work at private and public schools as school counselors, they are also hired by different ministries. They are employed at state counseling and research centers, counseling centers at universities, rehabilitation centers, ministry of justice, mental health services in military, social services and child protection agencies. They can also work as a private counselor in their own places.

One of the strongest features of the program is the academic staff. There are 12 full-time scholars with high qualities, four professors, three associate professors, four assistant professors, one research assistant with doctorate degree, and one lecturer specialized in different subjects in counseling. They also take part in both national and international projects. According to the figures provided by the Higher Education Council, our program was ranked as the seventh most chosen counseling program among state universities. The program offers a variety of courses, and opportunities for individual and group counseling practices.
