Department of Pharmacology

General Information about the Program

The Department of Pharmacology was established in 1987 in the Faculty of Pharmacy and has been contributing to the master’s and doctorate education as part of the Health Sciences Institute since 1993. Studies on the pharmacological screening of drug candidates obtained from natural and synthetic compounds, and also currently available drugs, investigations of their action mechanisms, behavioral pharmacology and molecular pharmacology are among the scientific research activities of the department. Currently, 6 full-time professors, 1 associate professor and 3 research assistants are employed in the department. The subjects that the students enrolled in the pharmacology programs could work on are smooth muscle pharmacology, cardiovascular pharmacology, central nervous system pharmacology, behavioral pharmacology, neuropharmacology, psychopharmacology, autonomic nervous system pharmacology, endocrine pharmacology, autacoids, experimental diabetes, cancer and antineoplastic activity, pain and antinociceptive activity, wound healing activity, anti-inflammatory activity, antithrombotic activity.

Career Opportunities

An understanding of medications, their origins, chemical properties, biological effects and medical application are offered through a post-graduate degree in pharmacology. During pharmacology training, candidates can develop advanced skills relating to complex scientific problems and enhance their ability in technical research, laboratory work and communication. A pharmacologist has expertise in the relationship of pharmaceuticals in physiological conditions, clinical trial development and analysis of the results, drug regulations and safety, also marketing of pharmaceuticals. Therefore, a degree in pharmacology provides opportunities to work in academia, industry, scientific authorities, hospitals, government healthcare facilities or other healthcare settings for research careers. A pharmacologist will also function on the product management side of the industry as a liaison between pharmaceutical firms, patients and doctors, in marketing and medical information.
