Department of Philosophy

General Information about the Department

Philosophy is the rational investigation of foundational truth. For this aim, philosophy introduces the means for a disciplined study of concepts. Philosophy provides the foundation of both social and natural sciences. For this reason, almost all scientists who have been pioneers of their fields and who have brought new prospects and aspects into their fields have also been interested in philosophy. However, philosophy is distinguished from other fields by its own methodology and the nature and depth of its subject matter. Philosophy is after solutions for problems from all aspects of life. Philosophy tries to create techniques to develop thoughts and arguments. As the systematic study of ideas and issues, philosophy can explore concepts and views drawn from science, arts, religion, politics or any other fields. Generally, philosophical investigations focus on the meaning and basis of a concept and its relation to other concepts. Based on the specific subject being studied, philosophy is divided into sub-branches such as Logic, Ethics, Metaphysics, Epistemology, Philosophy of Science, Philosophy of Language, Philosophical Aesthetics, and Political Philosophy. The Undergraduate Programme in Philosophy at Anadolu University consists of three majors, namely, Systematic Philosophy, Logic, and History of Philosophy. The following areas in philosophy are studied by the members of the department: Logic, Ethics, Epistemology, Metaphysics, Political Philosophy, History of Philosophy, and Philosophy of History.
