General Information about the Department
Sociology is a social science discipline that provides an education of a comprehensive understanding and explaining of social structures, social institutions and social interaction. At the national and global level, sociology focuses on the social interactions, the functioning of social institutions and the social changes. Anadolu University Sociology Department aims at training students to sociologically comprehend global, national and local social phenomena and analyze sociological issues in relation to other disciplines such as economy, history, politics and philosophy.
The Sociology Department in Anadolu University was established in 1993 and has approximately 500 students. The academic staff consists of four professors, two associate professors, four assistant professors and two assistants. Students take both theoretical and applied courses in sociology and are encouraged to take courses from related departments in order to develop themselves in their interest areas. The Department provides students an appropriate environment in which they can learn, study and practice sociological research. They graduate with a capability of analyzing and interpreting social facts and relating these with theoretical knowledge.
The courses include theoretical knowledge and contemporary debates on social science methodology, social change, rural and urban studies, food and nutrition, health and illness, economy, industry, gender, crime and violence, religion, social stratification and inequality, culture, politics, communication and media. Additional academic events are also regularly organized in the department. Some of them are seminars on current social developments, conferences of guest academic staff from other universities and annual student congresses. Sociology students are also welcomed to join the conference and seminars that are organized by related departments in the campus.
Within this frame, the Sociology Department in Anadolu University provides a rich and empowering academic environment that helps students prepare themselves for working life and post-graduate education.
Career Opportunities
Students graduated from the sociology department can be employed in the public and private sector.
In the public sector, sociology graduates can work as sociologists in the Ministry of Family and Social Policies, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Ministry of Internal Affairs and in local governments. They can work as specialists, consultants or researchers in penal institutions, social services and child protection agencies and the state institute of statistics. If they take the related courses in their education, they can also work as teachers in secondary education in public and private schools. With a short additional education and certificate which is appealed and taken after graduation, they can receive the title of family consultant and can work as family consultants. In the private sector, sociology graduates can work in human relations departments of companies, media organizations and companies and research companies. Sociology graduates can also continue their education and have academic careers.
Why international students should choose this department to study
First, all of the academic staff has got proficiency in English, which is an important factor for international students both in communication, education and academic success. Syllabuses of courses usually include English materials. Most of the national students also can communicate in English to an extent.
Second, nearly all formal documents related to procedures of Anadolu University are provided to students both in Turkish and English. In addition, the university has a quite large library that contains more than a million materials in many foreign languages, including English.
Thirdly, the Sociology Department of Anadolu University is part of a number of international agreements. The department is part of a joint degree program with SUNY University in USA. The department has agreements with many universities in the frame of two international student exchange programs. In the frame of ERASMUS+ student exchange program, the department has agreements with University of Pardubice (the Czech Republic), Hochschule RheinMain University of Applied Sciences (Germany), The University of Southern Denmark (Denmark), Universidad De Granada/ Spain (Spain), University of Valencia (Spain), Universita degli Studi di Genova (Italy), Universita degli Studi di Padova (Italy), The Academy of Business in Dąbrowa Górnicza (Poland), Uniwersytet Jagiellonski Krakow (Poland), Nicolaus Copernicus University (Poland), Univerza v Ljubljani (Slovenia). In the frame of MEVLANA student exchange program, the department has agreements with University of Manas (Kyrgyzstan) and International University of Sarajevo (Bosnia and Herzegovina).
