Department of Special Education

General Information about the Department

Anadolu University, Faculty of Education, Special Education Department was first established in 1982 as a Special Education Division under the Department of Educational Sciences, Psychological Services in Education. In the academic year of 1983-1984, for the first time in the Special Education Teaching Program, undergraduate students were enrolled under the name of "Special Education Teaching". In 1989, The Special Education Department was established with a new organizational structure in the Faculty of Education. Two departments were established within the Special Education Department: The Department of Education of the Hearing Impaired and the Department of Education for the Mentally Impaired. These departments have been accepting students at the undergraduate level as Hearing Impaired Education and Mentally Disabled Education Programs since 1989. In 2016-2017 academic year, special education teaching fields were combined and restructured under the name of "Special Education Teaching". Following that decision, today, under the Special Education Teaching Department of our university, there are the Hearing Impaired Education, the Mentally Disabled Education, the Specially Talented Education, the Autism Spectrum Disorder Education and the Visually Impaired Education Departments. Each year, 140 undergraduate students enroll the department. Special Education Teaching Program serves with 10 Professors, 5 Associate Professors, 10 Assistant Professors, 3 Research Assistant Doctors, 2 Instructors and 6 Research Assistants.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of Special Education Teaching Programme are employed as special education teachers by public or private special education institutions affiliated with the Ministry of National Education, General Directorate of Special Education and Guidance Services. Our graduates can work as a special education teacher in Guidance Research Centers as well as teaching at special education schools. In addition, our graduates can work in Special Education and Rehabilitation Centers. Considering the shortage of personnel trained in Special Education Teaching in our country, most of our graduates can be appointed as a result of the Public Personnel Selection Exam. Consequently, the field of Special Education Teaching Department is one of the rare teaching fields that hasn’t employment problems. In addition, students have the opportunity to become academics by completing postgraduate education programs.

Why international students should choose this department to study

Since its establishment, Anadolu University Special Education Department has played a pioneering role in terms of the number of academic staff providing services, experience and equipment as well as national and international research, projects, exchange programs and student mobility. Additionally, our department cooperates with our university's first and only several centers in Turkey (Research Centre for Education of Hearing Impaired Children, Research Centre for Speech and Language Disorders, Centre for Gifted Education, Research Institute for Individuals with Disabilities). In these centers, many individuals with special needs and their families are regularly served face-to-face and with distance education every year. In addition, our undergraduate students can find the opportunity to observe and practice in these centers. Anadolu University, being aware of the importance of the internationalization of a university, organizes regular meetings that initiate, encourage and develop Youth and other EU Programs. Our students can easily take part in international projects supported by the university's student clubs and other student organizations. In addition to the Erasmus + program, Anadolu University has many bilateral collaborations with universities in different parts of the world.
