Department of Tour Guiding
General Information about the Department
The program accepts students with the Foreign Language Score (English) of YKS conducted by ÖSYM. In order to graduate, students must be successful in courses of 240 credits (ECTS). These courses consist of compulsory, professional elective and elective courses. In addition to the compulsory English courses in eight semesters, students will have a second foreign language proficiency if they successfully pass one of the foreign languages of German, French or Russian for eight semesters. The second condition for students to graduate is a compulsory internship. Students graduate by doing an internship for sixty (60) days in businesses that comply with the conditions specified in the Anadolu University Tourism Faculty Internship Directive - for the Tour Guiding Program. Students who fulfill these conditions receive a "Tour Guiding Bachelor's Degree". However, to become a tour guide, the students must join the trips organized by The Turkish Union of Tour Guides (TUREB) and must have a score of foreign language proficiency exams determined by the relevant legislation. The program aims to provide students with values such as courtesy, tolerance, and respect which are important for the tour guiding profession; to teach theoretical knowledge such as history, history of religions, history of art, archeology and geography; to profess social skills such as leadership, analytical thinking, reasoning, problem solving, organizing and managing; to use another foreign language effectively besides English.
Career Opportunities
Our graduates can work as freelance or salaried tour guides in travel enterprises -provided that they successfully complete the training trip and have the requested score in a foreign language; they can be employed as tour guides by public institutions; work as guides in museums; establish their own businesses in different branches of the tourism industry; work at different levels of businesses in the tourism industry, especially in travel businesses; pursue an academic career by continuing their postgraduate education.
