General Information about the Department

The Turkish language opens up to you a region that is culturally, geographically, and historically connected to Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and the Middle East. Mastering the Turkish language and literature provides an understanding of Turkish culture, language history. The department offers to master on reading and interpreting the texts of both Old Turkic and Ottoman Turkic throughout the extensive modern courses. Undergraduate and graduate seminars cover Turkish art, literature, works of Ottoman and contemporary writers such as Seyh Galib, Yahya Kemal, and Orhan Pamuk.

The Department of Turkish Language and Literature has a two-fold purpose: the very first aim is to supply specialists in the field of Teaching Turkish with basic skills of Turcology and to prepare students for advanced work at the master and doctoral level; second purpose is to provide students with the opportunity of conducting comprehensive Turkish and Turkic studies with the study of other literatures and cultures, both Eastern and Western.

The Department of Turkish Language and Literature is designed to provide the student with a intercultural and comprehensive understanding of both linguistic and cultural sides field of Turkish language and literature. Along the same line, for close familiarity of students with developmental line of Turkish and Turkic languages through historical texts of different eras, extensive courses with the modern literary models of Old Turkic and Ottoman Turkic and with contemporary methods of linguistics and literary analysis is given in the department. Graduate students of the department are expected to develop a luminary and clear sensibility that will enable them to interpret and evaluate Turkish literature from comparative and visionary viewpoints.

Career Opportunities

The graduates of the department may continue academic career opportunities regarding master and Ph.D. processes, right along with continuing the libraries’ Ottoman text sections as an expert employee. Additionally, on the condition that applicants complete the necessary requirement of pedagogical formation (which is given as MA degree for the time being), graduate students can be employed as Turkish Language and Literature teachers at secondary schools as well as high schools, under the administration of the Ministry of Education as well private colleges.
