General Information about the Department

The Department of Turkish Music, established in 2017, provides training in the branches of kanun, kemençe, tanbur, ney, ud, fasıl singing, folk music singing and baglama.

Turkish maqam music is one of the most important cultural and civilization element from the Ottoman Era to the Republican Era in Turkey. Preserving maqam music in its original and traditional form and transferring it to the future without defect is the most prominent mission of Turkish Music academic staff. Furthermore, maqam-based music is the crucial parts used by Turkish contemporary composers who compose the music of the future. In addition to raising generations that preserve the maqam music in its most authentic form, training them as maqam music players skilled with Western music knowledge and allowing them to take part in contemporary original productions are the most significant goals.

Career Opportunities

Students can gain ability to perform in accordance with traditional Turkish / Ottoman maqam music with various local and international music ensembles.

Students can have capacity to learn and teach Turkish maqam music theory in different approaches.

Students can have ability to compose in different Turkish maqam music form.

Students can learn how to play the special percussion maqam music instruments.

The department, has the academic staff that teaches maqam-based music expertly containing eight maqam instruments and offers concert opportunities to students every semester with the ensemble named Anadolu Makam.

The department also organizes various seminars to bring together the best maqam music academics with the students.

Western music theory is taught as well as maqam music.

Classical Turkish maqam and folk music are taught under the same curriculum
